Description: The common legumes grown in rubber cultivation are Calopogonium caeruleum, Calopogonium mucunoides, Centrosema pubescens and Pueraria phaseoloides while Mucuna cochinchinensis was introduced lately. All of these legume seeds were + imported except Mucuna cochinchinensis. From 1972-6, the average imported seeds was valued at 15 million dollars. The highest price increase from 1974-8 was 61.5% for Pueraria phaseoloides, 52.2% for Centrosema pubescens, 20.6% for Calopogonium caeruleum+ and 5.8% for Calopogonium mucunoides. In a survey of legume cover crop seeds at the end of 1978, it was found that most cover crop seeds had germination percentage below 25% except Mucuna cochinchinensis. Calopogonium mucunoides had the lowest + percentage of germination of only 6.8%. The high proportion of dead seeds was attacked by Aspergillus species. A high percentage of hard seeds was also found. To overcome the hard seed problem, mechanical scarification of seeds for 24 h and acid + treatment with concentrated sulphuric acid are recommended. A quick method of seed germination test using Tetrazolium salt was evaluated for all the five species of legume seeds. The results of tetrazolium method showed no significant difference when + compared with the normal germination test. The tetrazolium method could be adopted to test the seeds before large-scale planting of cover crop seeds. Thiram seed treatment will prevent infection of the seedlings. As a result of the rising cost of + imported cover crop seeds and the poor quality of seeds available commercially, a seed certification scheme is recommended and cover crop seed production should be studied under local conditions.
